Experts offer tips to stay safe in the water Memorial Day weekend
GLASGOW Ky.- Hot weather and a Memorial Day weekend equals a prime time to get in the water. Swimming in large bodies of water like the Barren River Lake is popular this time of year, in addition to boating. For both activities, Warren County Emergency Management deputy director Travis Puckett recommends preparing before hitting the water.
“We’ll see people are not prepared. They’ll get caught out in a storm. They didn’t know the forecast or watch the weather, or they did not know to take water with them. Even though they’re floating on the water, they still need water to stay hydrated with,” Puckett said.
For boat rides, experts recommend checking your vessel for any holes, no matter how small. Park ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Holly Myers says a crucial aspect to water safety is always having a life jacket even if you’re a skilled swimmer.
“A lot of folks think that just because you know how to swim, maybe you don’t need a life jacket. A lot of times, people that drown don’t even intend to be in the water. Accidents do happen, so we recommend everyone wear their life jacket all the time, even though they may know how to swim,” Myers said.
When it comes to water travel, Myers said to treat alcohol just as you would on the road. Regardless of the terrain, it impairs judgment, and prevents you from fully enjoying the water.
“We always say alcohol and water don’t mix. You want to get out there and have a good day, and we want to make sure we avoid any accidents or any problems. leave the alcohol at home,” Myers said.
