Epicenter, points leader for Kentucky Derby, born in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A horse that could win it all at the Kentucky Derby this May was born right here in Bowling Green.
The thoroughbred, Epicenter, is now three-years-old and is currently the points leader for qualifying for the Derby. He was born at Westwind Farm off of Three Springs Road.
Right now, Epicenter is in Louisiana for training and his next race at the end of March. The owners of Westwind, the Harris brothers, still have the mother, Silent Candy, at their farm. Mike Harris said they sold Epicenter at the Keeneland Yearling Sale in Lexington…they knew he was special.
Harris said it’s not very common that a horse from Bowling Green makes the Derby. It’ll be a first for them.
“My grandfather started the farm in the mid-60s. And this will be the first time we have one that we actually bred that’s gonna be in the Derby. We’ve had them in the Preakness and we’ve had one in the Belmont, but never in the Kentucky Derby. So it’s kind of exciting for us,” said Harris.
Epicenter currently has enough points to qualify for the Derby without this next race. As long as he doesn’t get injured or sick, you will see him take the track in May.
