Edmonson County Art Guild puts up flags in downtown Brownsville
BROWNSVILLE, Ky. – In honor of the military that have served Edmonson County, the Art Guild decided to hang some flags around downtown Brownsville, and it all started when director Phyllis Miller and her husband Mark were on their way back from a trip.
“We came across Clarkson, and they had a few flags on their telephone poles… I can’t remember how many… and I told Phyllis, I thought that would be really nice if we did that in Brownsville, and then she and Lydia took it from there,” Mark says.
That idea originally consisted of about 20 flags, which turned into 200 in honor of Edmonson County’s bicentennial. Even Judge Executive Scott Lindsey got involved.
“It was a project that they brought to me a few weeks ago… was taken off really fast but they came to me and talked to me about putting the flags out there. I never will forget the first day I came into my office after they got the first ones hung up when you popped over the hill in Brownsville, it was just wall to wall flags… and I thought man, that’s about as good as it gets. That’s great,” Judge Lindsey says.
He’s so proud of the community coming together to support those who have served our country.
“I think that just speaks volumes for our community… and we’ve always been a patriotic community and we’ve always supported our military men and women and I think this is just another step forward. Internally, we are all patriotic and try to support everything that we can, but this is an external showing of our patriotism, and I think it’s beautiful,” Lindsey said.
The Art Guild has been blown away by all those who have supported as well.
“It has just completely been more than we can hardly imagine. It’s just been fantastic to see our community rally together for something like this and do it together in about two weeks… I mean, we just keep ordering flags and it’s just… everybody wants to be a part and it’s just fantastic to see the community do that,” Phyllis said.
