EDMONSON COUNTY, Ky. – Edmonson County judge-executive Ronald Scott Lindsey is sharing some tips on avoiding scams as contractors stop in the community following storm damage.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Lindsey states, “I want to make it clear that this post is not to smear or accuse any contractor of wrongdoing but simply an attempt to protect people in our community.”

The judge-executive says that if a contractor asks you to sign a contact with them, you should respond by saying you would like to consult with your insurance company on further guidance. He also states that a legitimate contractor will welcome this effort, while an illegitimate contractor will try to convince you not to contact your insurance company.

Lindsey stated that in the past, the community has had contractors arrive after a severe storm that resulted in residents signing contracts that locked them into paying for work even with an insurance denial.

“I am not accusing anyone of using these tactics currently,” Lindsey stated. “I just want to protect everyone from falling prey to this type of business practice that could cost them thousands of dollars out of pocket that won’t be covered by their insurance company.”

If you see a contact, Lindsey says to read through all of the sections and keep a copy. He also warns residents to stay aware that digital contracts require signatures.
