Driver cited after crashing into school bus in McCracken County

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. – A driver was cited after reportedly crashing into an occupied school bus in McCracken County on Wednesday.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, around 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, deputies responded to a two-vehicle collision involving a McCracken County Public Schools bus.

Authorities say the crash occurred in the 3300 block of Olivet Church near the intersection with Pace Drive while both vehicles had been traveling south.

After authorities spoke with witnesses and both drivers, they say they determined the driver of the passenger car, identified as 48-year-old Leroy Smith of Kevil, had driven into the back of the school bus.

Deputies say the school bus was stopped with children unloading and all safety functions operating properly.

According to authorities, this included the bus’s stop arm, stop sign and red flashing stop lights.

Authorities say the bus was occupied by 27 school children at the time. Only one injury was reported, deputies say, which was minor and non-incapacitating.

Smith was transported by Mercy Regional Ambulance Service to an area hospital for non-incapacitating injuries.

Smith was cited to court by deputies for reckless driving, authorities say.

The MCSO was assisted at the scene by McCracken County Public Schools, Mercy Ambulance Service, Concord Fire Department and Bailey’s Towing.
