Diabetes a growing health concern for children

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The latest report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that in the age group 18 and under, more than 200,00 people are diabetic. And that number will likely only rise.

Dr. Voakes, a pediatrician with Fairview Community Health Center, says there’s a simple explanation for the rise in cases of diabetes – sugar, specifically fructose. The problem with cutting back on all that sugar, it tastes good.

While diabetes alone is a serious health problem, it’s connected to other health problems. Kevin Kirby, Warren County’s Coroner, is also active in raising money and awareness for juvenile diabetes. He believes the increased awareness might be working.

Kirby says when parents know the signs of diabetes and they see their children showing those signs that means parents can ask their child’s pediatrician if testing is needed.
