Deputy injured in Wednesday night wreck

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Warren County Sheriff’s deputy is listed in stable condition Thursday morning after being involved in a collision Wednesday night.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Thursday Deputy Phillip Gaines had just completed answering a call and was driving along Upper Stone Avenue near the intersection with Stone Avenue, when a vehicle driven by Derek Cordell, 34, of Bowling Green crossed the center line and struck Gaines’ marked patrol vehicle on the front driver’s side, according to a release from Kentucky State Police.

A medical helicopter flew the deputy to Vanderbilt University Medical Center due to his injuries.

The sheriff’s office asked Kentucky State Police to conduct the collision investigation due to the circumstances, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Cordell was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center where he was treated and released. He was arrested and charged with first-degree assault on a police officer, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs first offense (aggravated circumstance) and first-degree criminal mischief.

He was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail. His bond had not yet been set as of 9:22 a.m. Thursday.
