December ’21 tornado survivor continues journey of recovery, how you can help

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Even after four years, some members of the community are still recovering from the effects of the December 2021 tornadoes.

The Center for Accessible Living is helping these victims get back on their feet and find the resources that they need. The Center for Accessible Living helps advocate for victims of the tornado and helps them get items they may need to help their daily lives.

They also help them find housing and the proper resources that will help make everyday living easier.

For Mahira Besic, someone who lost everything in the tornadoes, they have helped her find housing and provided her with a wheelchair accessible ramp.

Besic still has a ways to go in getting the things she needs, but she is grateful for what the center has provided her.

Speaking on her behalf, Lindsey Chaffin Scott, the manager at the Center for Accessible Living, stated, “The one thing that she wanted me to share with the community was that she would not be where she’s at today if it wasn’t for the help of Center for Accessible Living and other resources like Kentucky Legal Aid, who have helped her and the Warren County disaster Recovery Fund.”

The company has raised money for Besic and her recovery since she came to them a year ago. Currently, she has a GoFundMe open to help get her a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

In the GoFundMe, Besic states the following occurred on Dec. 11:

“I lost everything—the ability to walk, to move, to feel my legs ever again. I was caught in the devastating tornado that tore through Bowling Green, Kentucky, that night. It destroyed everything in its path, including my world.”

Besic continues, stating, “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helps me achieve my dream of owning a wheelchair-accessible van. Your generosity brings me closer to living as normal a life as possible, and I cannot thank you enough.”
