Copper thefts raise concerns from Farmers RECC

GLASGOW, Ky. – Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation is raising awareness of the dangers surrounding copper wire thefts.
Farmers RECC stated in a release Wednesday that recent copper thefts from its utility poles have caused them to be concerned for safety reasons.
The co-op says anyone who approaches a utility pole without proper training is at risk.
In addition, the release states that removing grounds from the poles can put lineworkers at risk from safety hazards, along with making the system less reliable.
Farmers RECC says the copper wire grounds protect the poles from lightning strikes, and without them, the electric grid is more susceptible to failing for homes, businesses or schools.
Farmers RECC says this also puts a strain on lineworkers, who have to locate affected poles.
The company stated, “Climbing a pole to fix an issue is part of the job. Fixing damage done by thieves is an extra job for our team that just isn’t necessary. Every member is important to us, and we want to make sure we deliver reliable power to you all the time.”
Farmers RECC says the community can help by reporting any unusual activity to them and local authorities. If you see someone around a utility pole that doesn’t belong, please contact their office and the sheriff in your county.
