Cooking in Kentucky before the Civil War

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It’s safe to assume, many of us know that cooking has changed over the last century. From baking in a Dutch oven, utilizing salamanders, even down to who cooks in the kitchen, it all has changed.

Many historians focus on commonly discussed political perspectives, but one Eastern Kentucky University professor takes a deeper dive into the history of cooking and how times have changed.

Cynthia Resor says, “It’s a completely different world, and also so much history is about politics and men, and I think that looking at social history and the roles of women is really important. And of course, women have cooked for thousands of years.”
