Computer programming at Jennings Creek breaks language barriers
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Jennings Creek Elementary school is offering students a way to excel in their studies.
The school is known as a computer science immersion school. It means the school offers courses in coding and programming in the main curriculum. The classes are given in cycles. Cycle 1 involves coding interactive games.
Jennings Creek is in fact the first computer science immersion school in the state. Educators say teaching courses like this at a young age is beneficial for our developing world of technology.
Second grade teacher at Jennings Creek Amanda Hammock said the programming courses can be taught to anyone regardless of what language they speak.
“Coding is a new language for all of us. We started coding last year, so it was new for me too. Even students who don’t speak English, they learn coding the same way,” Hammock said.
Starting this December, Jennings Creek will start utilizing Cycle 2, where students will be able to program their own Lego robots.
