City schools provide sneak peek for incoming sixth graders at BGJHS

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- When the bell rings Aug. 8 those starting Bowling Green Junior High School will be embarking on a new educational journey.

To make the often nerve-wracking transition from elementary to middle school, Bowling Green Junior High school hosted Sixth Grade Jump Start. This is where incoming students can get acquainted with their new classrooms, lockers and teachers. Sixth grade principal of Bowling Green Junior High Darlene Porter said the goal of this effort is to calm the nerves of students and parents.

“It’s a great feeling for kids and for families to know that we know they’re nervous about coming to school and especially coming to a new school, the junior high is something that’s new for them,” Porter said.

And the students have already taken away a lot from their new experiences of junior high.

“I’m a little nervous but I think once I get though the year, I’ll be a little more excited,” rising sixth grader of Bowling Green Junior High Jasmine Avis said.

Even the staff who aren’t with the sixth grade class pitched in.

“I think it’s just a great transition, because they’re coming from five elementary schools within the district to come here to the junior high, to be one group and to move together as a group and to see and feel what that’s like,” seventh grade social studies teacher at Bowling Green Junior High Ashley Whittle said.

In the end, Sixth Grade Jump-Start is also the start of a new journey for the staff.

“They are excited to be here, excited to see one another, and just to learn more about Bowling Green Junior High. It’s been a great day for them as well as for us to get to meet them,” Porter said.
