City school students serve community through school program
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-When it comes to serving the community, Bowling Green High School offers a way to get firsthand experience through the Take the LEAD program.
On Thursday, juniors from Bowling Green High School were placed in different locations throughout the community to learn and serve. These include the Salvation Army and the Bowling Green Warren County Humane Society. At each location, students were joined by a school staff member. Bowling Green High School science teacher Colten Collings joined the students at the Salvation Army.
“It’s really great to actually see these kids get to do something that’s contributing back to the community. We hope that things like this are going to fill them with a spirit that’s going to keep volunteering even after they’re out of high school,” Collings said.
Take the LEAD Day began in 2017 for ninth grade students in the Joseph Tinius LEAD academy. The academy name stands for leadership, excellence, achievement and diversity.
From loading boxes with food to making sure animals at the shelter were getting the love they deserve; students said it was an enjoyable experience.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for Bowling Green to let us get out in the community and help the community,” said Bowling Green High School junior Jordan Dingle.
While it was just the juniors today, all grades will get to participate through the year. Current students said they’re looking forward to when the future Bowling Green Purples get to experience Take the LEAD in their high school days.
“I would tell them to take advantage of their opportunities because this is a once in a lifetime thing that you can do through your school. It helps you learn and grow,” said Bowling Green High School junior Bella Elder.
Seniors will serve on March 10, Sophomores on April 8 and Freshman on May 1.
