City of Morgantown goes all out for United States’ 250th anniversary with event lineup

MORGANTOWN, Ky. – The City of Morgantown is preparing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States with a huge lineup of events in 2026.

With the United States’ 250th birthday vastly approaching, Morgantown is planning to pull out all the stops for this year’s coming events.

Each Fourth of July, Morgantown puts on the biggest firework show in western Kentucky. And with this being the 250th anniversary of this country, they are planning to nearly double the amount of fireworks bought going from spending $50,000 to $75,000.

By preparing for this years festivities, the city hopes to bring the tight knit community together for many fun events.

“The great thing about being in a small town is everybody comes together. Everybody gets to be part of everything. And this year, we decided that it was so important to really celebrate our 250th year of the nation. And, to do that, you got to go all out. So that’s what we’re hoping to do this year,” said Billy Phelps, mayor of Morgantown Kentucky.

The lineup of events includes the Ms. Morgantown pageant on June 5, The Roots and Rhythm Festival June 6, America’s 250th Firework Show on the Fourth of July, The Hispanic Heritage Festival on Sept. 19, Mayor’s Monster Mash Oct. 24 and the Holiday Hoopla on Nov. 21.
