City of Bowling Green holds second annual Downtown Duck Drop

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Members of the community gathered at the Fringe on Eighth Avenue as the second annual Downtown Duck Drop was held Monday afternoon.

The simple yet silly event returned for the second year in a row and allowed those who participated to purchase a rubber duck for $10 and have the potential to win numerous prizes to many different local businesses and restaurants.

The idea of the Duck Drop itself came from the 1970’s sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati” where they had a Thanksgiving event gone wrong.

All of the money raised will go to help the nonprofit A Better BGKY, which raises money for free downtown community programs and events like Duncan Hines Days, Harvest Festival and Light Up Bowling Green.

This year, the event raised over $1,000 and had 22 businesses participate, which is 10 more compared to the previous year. As the event gains more popularity, the city will look to expand it.

“I think it was maybe ten more businesses compared to last year that I had to be part of it. I would love to see it become even more of a spectacle,” said Telia Butler, downtown development coordinator for the City of Bowling Green. “Yard games with Parks and Rec and a couple of extra food trucks if the weather is nice and add maybe even multiple drops to see like fleets of ducks. So yes, more. More please.”

The city will have more events next week as Light up Bowling Green is set to begin.
