Celebrating Autism Awareness Month

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Around the world, April is known as Autism Awareness Month where we celebrate differences and recognize individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

At the Suzanne Vitale Clinical Education Complex at WKU, the Kelly Autism Program offers the community and college students support if needed with a variety of things related to Autism. News 40 spoke to the director of the program and a student about Autism Awareness Month and the implications of the coming days.

We were told that no two people with Autism are alike, and that the spectrum is very wide and characteristics of the disorder can present themselves in many different ways. There could be some difficulties with communication or socialization, but these are not considered blockades, just workarounds at times.

Everyone is different, Autism or not, and coming from those who work to support ASD individuals and those with Autism, everyone just wants to be treated equally and with respect.
