HORSE CAVE, Ky. – On Saturday, history was on the line in Horse Cave as the Caverna Colonels boys’ basketball team were eyeing to win the school’s first District 18 Championship since 2016.

While their opponents, the LaRue County Hawks were eyeing to get win number nine in 10 years.

Coming out of halftime, the game was tied at 20 point a piece, but LaRue County would come out on an 8-0 run.

Cortavian Maxey would make several big plays to close out the third quarter for the colonels igniting an 11-0 run of their own.

The run would lead to the Colonels taking the lead early in the fourth quarter.

With the clock winding down both teams battled trading baskets with neither squad able to pull out the win just yet and the game would head to overtime.

But thanks to a late push down the stretch, in the end, it would be the Colonels would come out victorious, taking down LaRue County 48 to 40.

Caverna basketball player Tyson Martin recognized his team’s accomplishment after the game, “I feel great. I love it because we like. In 10 years, we get to see 2026 up there.” referring to the rafters.

The team wouldn’t be where they are without head coach Josh Pittman and what he used as a motivation.

“More so I wanted to do it for the community. You know, we’ve gone through a lot in the last six months, the last couple years with deaths and I told the guys, you got to remember why you do it.” said Pittman.

“When we were down 28 to 20, it wasn’t looking too good, and I just said, it’s about guts right now.” he added

The message he relayed to the team, “Just play for each other and play for other people. There’s a lot of people here that all they rely on basketball to get away from life for an hour and a half, so it was like stay together, win for them, play for each other, and it all take care of itself,” said Caverna Basketball player Gavin Lightning.
