Caverna High School cuts ribbon on $200,000 tennis courts

HORSE CAVE, Ky. – Caverna High School cut the ribbon on its brand-new tennis courts Tuesday afternoon, marking the return of a beloved sport to the school and the community.

The old courts, which dated back to the 1950s, had suffered decades of wear and tear and were no longer safe for play. But thanks to the support of the local community, more than $200,000 was invested over the past two years to rebuild and restore four modern tennis courts.

“The courts I remembered playing on at Caverna High were in poor condition, and that just couldn’t continue,” said Terry Bunnell, president and CEO of People’s Bank. “So I knew I had to help bring tennis back to this community. It starts with the courts and the program at Caverna High School. It’s about rebirthing the tennis program.”

Caverna tennis had been on hiatus since 2019, but the program was revived in 2024. More than five years after the last home match, the Colonels are set to compete on their new courts this spring.

And the courts aren’t just for school teams. The newly renovated facility is open for the entire community to enjoy, giving local residents a chance to play, practice and grow the game of tennis in Hart County.
