Cave City voters hear from candidates ahead of Election Day

CAVE CITY, Ky. (WNKY) — With Election Day three weeks away, Cave City voters had a chance Tuesday night to hear directly from candidates running for mayor and city council.

The Cave City Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Barrenside, hosted a candidate forum at the Cave Area Conference Center.

Nine people are running for Cave City City Council. The six candidates receiving the most votes will earn seats on the council.

Candidates for both city council and mayor answered questions from moderators, along with questions submitted by citizens ahead of the event.

Cave City resident Jacob Gossett said staying involved in local government is important to him.

“I’ve always been interested in politics and the country and our community would be totally different if everyone stayed engaged,” Gossett said. “And so I like to try to. And so this is the opportunity to do that.”

Cave City resident Monica Morgan said she attended the forum to learn more about the candidates and their positions.

“I came out tonight to hear the mayor and see what they’re going to go about and what their beliefs are,” Morgan said. “And more about the data center.”

Candidates were asked about a range of issues, including city improvements, future development, abandoned buildings, the budget and what they hope to accomplish if elected.

Morgan said the data center remains her biggest concern.

“Right now the data center is the biggest thing that is facing Cave City right now,” she said.

Gossett said some of the challenges he sees in the community extend beyond city government.

“The economy,” Gossett said. “And I think that goes for everywhere. Addiction and homelessness is on the rise a lot. At work I see the dumpster getting raided at night, you know, for food. And so I think that’s a big thing.”

The forum gave voters an opportunity to hear from candidates before heading to the polls on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3.
