Cave City Fire Department stops in neighborhoods for annual Christmas Eve Fruit Drop

CAVE CITY, Ky. – On Christmas Eve, Cave City Fire Department held its annual fruit drop, a long-lasting holiday tradition that has been done since the 1960s.

Each year on Christmas Eve, Cave City Fire Department travels the city’s streets handing out bags of fruit to members of the community.

Citizens of Cave City stand outside of their houses in their driveways waiting to see Santa and Mrs. Claus as the firemen bring them fruit.

The fire department has kept this tradition going for decades. Since the 1960s, they’ve handed out fruit every year.

The event is something everyone in Cave City looks forward to during the holidays, with multiple generations sharing their memories as it gets closer.

“We go down every street in the city limits of Cave City and hand out a bag of fruit, and we take Santa Claus along with us. Mrs. Claus and the kids just love it. And the families, you know, we make a post on Facebook every year, and the comments that people put on, they’re talking about their memories from childhood and their grandkids and everything that they remember. This tradition is pretty awesome,” said Andrew Bagshaw, battalion chief at Cave City Fire Department.

The tradition continued this year early Wednesday morning, ensuring more memories live on in the community.
