Camping sites filling up fast as weather warms up

CAVE CITY, Ky.- Spring is quickly approaching as are warmer temperatures.

And people are busting out the camping gear in anticipation.

“This year looks like it’s gonna be a good year. A lot more people have been calling and asking about camping,” said Rock Cabin Camping owner Ralph Scrovan.

“This week we’ve opened our seasonal camping reservations online and we’re seeing a lot of people kind of booking up for the summer. You know through the week it’s pretty open but on the weekends it tends to fill up a little more and we’re seeing our holiday weekends especially getting full right now,” said Mammoth Cave National Park spokeswoman Molly Schroer.

One weekend that the campground staff said is extremely popular is Memorial Day weekend, which is a little less than two months away.

Staff also said the uptake in campers may be from the ongoing pandemic. Camping allows people to be outside, stay socially distanced, and get out of the house.

“One they wanna get out and about. Two, you’re socially distanced in your own camper. You don’t have to worry about going to the hotel or sharing a lobby or things like that,” said Scrovan.

This week marks a year since the pandemic began in Kentucky, and Schroer says people are itching to get out and about again.

“I think people wanna get outside and just do some different things and stuff, and get on different trails and stretch their legs a little bit. And especially as the weather starts warming up and this nice sun is coming out, everybody wants to be outside and get out there,” said Schroer.

Schroer said in years past people have just shown up the day of to camp, but this year you should make a reservation in advance to make sure to reserve your spot. You can make a reservation online here.
