Butler County Animal Shelter holds adoptions during the 45th Buick GS Nationals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – When you come to Beech Bend Raceway, you’re usually there for a few things: loud cars, good food and… pet adoptions?

During the Buick GS Nationals from April 29 to May 2, the Butler County Animal Shelter, along with other shelters, have partnered to hold adoptions throughout the event.

Richard Lasseter, president of the Buick GS Club of America, wanted to give a local animal shelter the chance to hold an adoption at the event and find some of their dogs and cats a forever home.

He then chose the Butler County Animal Shelter to partner with for the event, but he got a little more help than he initially thought.

They were just excited that we were going to come. And I told them, you know, is it okay for other shelters to come? And they’re like, absolutely. We love animals. We want as many organizations there as possible,” said Ruby Fooks, director at the Butler County Animal Shelter.

Lasseter’s goal was not only to give the community a chance to adopt some of these animals from shelters who may be nearing capacity, but to also give them a chance to find their new person or family.

“I’m an animal person. I love animals, dogs, cats and any kind of animals. And I wanted to do something we could kind of give back to the population in this area for somebody to help the dogs too. Because people have their safety nets, animals do not have their safety net,” said Lasseter.

All the shelters involved will have various different cats, kittens, dogs and puppies throughout the weekend available for adoption.

There will be a chance for attendees to get to know some of these animals one on one and get to spend time with them before making any decisions, almost like a test drive.

“We’re going to, offer people to walk our dogs before adoptions to kind of let them stretch their legs, maybe get a feel of their personality, whatnot. Maybe like a temporary foster thing while they’re here at the event,” Fooks added.
