Bushman in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In a neighborhood of Bowling Green, there’s a woman who with the help of her husband, decorates their tall bush in the backyard.

When Chrys Wilson and her husband Gene moved to Bowling Green around 20 years ago, they ignored their already standing shrub in the backyard, but one day Chrys had a fleeting idea. Around 10 years ago, the couple started decorating the shrub or bush or maybe it’s a hedge? We’re not really sure and neither is she, she just knows she has fun putting a face on it from time to time.

It’s been a bride, a snowman, a pirate and a turkey as well as many other things. Sometimes the outfits are seasonal, or it’s just whatever it’s owner happens to be feeling.

Chrys said she’s seen several people over the years stop and take a picture, smiling while explaining “they don’t ask they just take it, but that’s fine it’s just in the backyard…” but it’s something that gives her motivation to keep it up.

With the height the bush can reach if not tended, it can be a bit of a chore for Chrys, but she concluded her interview with “I’m not sure how much longer I’ll do it, or how strange it’ll get and what it’ll be next but the community likes it and it makes me grin a little too. I like working outside so that makes it easier.”
