Burn bans remain in effect for South Central Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- As Labor Day weekend approaches, burn bans remain in effect across South Central Kentucky. Despite the holiday, officials say it’s highly unlikely the bans will be lifted due to extremely dry conditions.

Fire Code Inspector Steve Coleman warns that weather conditions are ideal for wildfires, urging residents to avoid any fire-related activities, including bonfires, burning leaves, and even barbecues.

Outreach Manager Shane Holinde explains that some areas have received less than a quarter inch of rain this August. He adds, “We’ve had such a dry spell for the past 3 weeks. If you think you’re going to burn something, don’t. It’s just completely too dry.”

The lack of rain, paired with falling leaves and occasional wind, creates a perfect storm for fast-moving fires. Experts say even small flames can spread rapidly and impact entire counties. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow local fire safety guidelines.
