Brownsville residents looking forward to better internet service

BROWNSVILLE, Ky.- People in Brownsville could be getting faster and more reliable internet service.

The Brownsville City Council is finalizing paperwork that will allow them to move forward with the KY Wired project. The goal of the project is to create better internet service options for Edmonson county and Brownsville city residents.

South Central Rural Telecommunications Cooperative has agreed to partner with KY Wired on the project.

SCRTC general manager Jeff Eaton said the company is bidding on the project.

“Currently we will be bidding on a telecommunications and cable franchise with the city of Brownsville,” Eaton said. “The deadline for bids is March 4. Once we have a franchise we will begin engineering the route for construction.

“After engineering is complete, all make ready work will need to be completed, most of this work we will be working with utilities in the city of Brownsville so we can begin construction. We would like to have the Kentucky wired project completed within a year of signing the franchise.

As for moving forward on the Kentucky Wired we are in contract with the state to construct roughly 89 miles of fiber for Kentucky Wired in seven counties. All South Central construction is completed on this project except for the city of Brownsville,” Eaton said.

The entire process could take up to as much as 12 months, and much of it depends on the weather.
