BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Registrations is now open for the Barren River Area Safe Space’s inaugural Steps for Safety 5K and Kids Fun Run on Saturday, Oct. 10.

According to BRASS, Inc., the event will take place at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green. Organizers say the 5K will benefit BRASS, Inc. and its actions to support survivors of domestic violence and their children.

In 2025, BRASS, Inc. says law enforcement recorded 2,325 reports of domestic and dating violence in the 10-county Barren River Area Development District, which BRASS, Inc. serves. According to the nonprofit, those reports resulted in 684 arrests.

The current 5K registration fee is $30 and increases to $40 on Oct. 1, according to organizers.

The Steps for Safety event will include music with a DJ, family-friendly activities, including the Kids Fun Run, community vendors, local partners and entertainment, race swag for 5K participants, a finisher lanyard medal for Kids Fun Run participants, free parking, water stations and no time limit to complete the 5K.

“October gives us an especially important opportunity to talk openly about domestic violence and to remind our community that safety is something we all have a role in creating,” said Tori Henninger, chief executive officer of BRASS, Inc. “Steps for Safety allows people to do that in a positive, welcoming way while standing with survivors throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month.”

The Steps for Safety 5K begins at 8 a.m., and the Kids Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m.
