Bowling Green World War II veteran remembers Omaha Beach on D-Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, a Bowling Green Army veteran is remembering the day he and Allied Forces stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy.

Charles Adams Sr., who is now in his 90s, was an army combat engineer during World War II.

Adams lied about his age when he was in high school so he could join the military. He did so in 1943.

A year later, on June 6, Adams was among the more than 150,000 troops to arrive at Omaha Beach, a day he will never forget, especially because of what happened to the boat he was riding on.

“We loaded all of our equipment and stuff to go in on the beach in Normandy and we got ready to go in and unload and the water got so rough, it sunk.”

Adams says he spent about 7 weeks in Normandy. He would later fight in the Battle of the Bulge and was then a guard at the Nuremberg Trials.
