Bowling Green unveils David Whitson Public Safety Training Center

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The City of Bowling Green officially cut the ribbon Friday on the new David Whitson Public Safety Training Center.

The $20.6 million facility unites the Bowling Green Police Department and Bowling Green Fire Department under one roof.
City leaders say the state-of-the-art center will provide essential training resources for those who protect the community. Police Chief Michael Delaney reflected on the personal meaning behind the project.

He recalled beginning his own police academy journey on January 5, 1998, alongside four other recruits. Among them was Officer David Whitson, for whom the center is named.

“David was more than an officer,” Delaney said. “He was a friend, a brother, a shining example of what it means to serve with honor.”

The dedication marks 19 years since Whitson’s passing, honoring his legacy of service. Deputy Chief Penny Bowles said the facility represents the highest form of tribute.

“The highest honor is to leave a legacy and imprint the next generation,” Bowles said.

Fire Department representative Justin Brooks echoed that sentiment, calling the center a symbol of progress. “While most will just see police and fire through this new facility, today is simply more,” Brooks said.

Officials believe the center will prepare first responders for decades to come. They say investing in training today ensures a safer, stronger Bowling Green tomorrow.
