Bowling Green Police Department introduces new unit
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the help of some grant funding, the Bowling Green Police Department has been able to start a new community focused leg of the force.
Officers Amber Kae Bowman and Andrew Kilbourne who have been with the department for several years are now the newly appointed Community Resource Officers for the department, meaning they’ll be doing a plethora of appearances in Bowling Green. Bowman and Kilbourne will be heading up community service initiatives for the department and looking to start programs that are in Bowling Green’s best interest.
Sergeant Brad Hogue, who is over Community Engagement & Recruiting for the department said he is excited to start the new unit and see it grow over the next 4 years that the grant funds, looking forward to positively impacting the community.
Hogue told News 40 that just last week, they had their very first impromptu event called Popsicle Patrol. The officers handed out water and popsicles to unsuspecting community members as it was very hot that day. He said one woman they handed a popsicle to was experiencing homeless and that her reaction hinted that it was a very positive part of her day and that’s what they strive for in this new unit.
Kilbourne and Bowman said they look forward to meeting more of the community as that is the best part of being a police officer for them. They told us that the community should be on the look out for outdoor and school events as well as community initiatives like aiding further with the homeless community in the coming months.
