Bowling Green man pleads guilty to killing his uncle

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-A Bowling Green man with a long history of violence pleaded guilty to murdering his 87-year-old uncle.

Gregory Shields appeared in Warren County Circuit Court today for a status hearing, and admitted to killing his uncle, Samuel Murrell, in 2017.

Shields was living with his uncle, and his uncle’s wife Maude at the time of the crime.

Maude, the lone witness in the murder, passed away last year at the age of 83. Before her passing, Maude testified that on the night of the murder the elderly couple was resting in bed, when Shields came in and cut his uncle with a knife multiple times and threatened to slit his throat.

At the time of the murder, Shields was out on probation for a prior felony assault conviction. He attacked his girlfriend in 2015 after allegedly, she refused to have sex with him.

Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron says that Shields has a lengthy criminal history involving multiple assault convictions dating back to 1989

“I think most of all for Shields’ family, not having to go through a trial and relive what happened to Samuel Murrell, has significant value to them,” Cohron said.

Shields is expected to be sentenced to 25 years. Sentencing will take place in July.
