Bowling Green Fire Department educates community during ‘Fire Prevention Week’

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Fire Prevention Week is an annual campaign dedicated to keeping families safe from fires.

The Bowling Green Fire Department is taking the opportunity to visit schools and community centers, spreading the message of safety and prevention. This week, firefighters stopped by the Bowling Green Learning Center to teach students what to do in case of a fire.

“We just remind people about generic fire safety tips – things they may not think about every day,” BGFD public information officer Katie McKee said. “It’s an opportunity to get out in the community and talk about fire safety.”

This year’s national theme focuses on the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which have been linked to more than 25,000 fires across the U.S. between 2017 and 2022. Firefighters say Kentucky has also seen an increase in battery-related incidents in recent years.

As the holiday season approaches, McKee advises using battery-powered decorations instead of lithium-ion or open-flame options, and to always stay alert in the kitchen while cooking.

Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 11.
