Bowling Green Farmers’ Market celebrates National Farmers’ Market Week
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This week, August 1st to August 7th, marks National Farmers’ Market week. According to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, last year, farmers’ markets reported sales of nearly $13.5 million dollars.
This week salutes the 173 farmers’ markets spread across 115 out of Kentucky’s 120 counties.
In Bowling Green on August 5th, the Community Farmers Market celebrated the event with their Night Y’all market.
Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said he hopes that the increase of support he has seen for farmers’ markets and buying from other local businesses is not just a phase.
“Local agriculture is real. One of the silver linings of COVID-19 is that many Kentuckians, including myself, learned how to cook again and their kitchens, and so we hope that buying local is not a fan of 2020 but something that is permanent,” said Quarles. “And food tastes better when it comes from your backyard. We all know that, and we want to help support Kentucky Proud sells whether they’re a farmers’ market, at the local grocery store, gas stations or roadside markets as well.”
Next week, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and Community Farm Alliance (CFA) will have a series of events across the state to celebrate Kentucky Farmers’ Markets Week and the Kentucky Double Dollars program.
