Bowling Green Commissioners talk taxes, population and police cars

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Bowling Green City Commissioners voted Tuesday night to keep the property tax at its current rate, discussed the city’s growth, and decided to buy new police cars.

Commissioners voted on first reading to keep real estate property tax rate the same as it was last year – 20.5 cents per $100 of assessed value. The second and final vote is scheduled to take place Sept. 7.

Other matters unanimously approved at the meeting included the city manager accepting an emergency purchase for roughly a dozen police vehicles and a contract extension for demolition and sinkhole related services. 

Results from the 2020 census data were announced and show that as of April 1, 2020 Bowling Green’s population was 72,294 people. That’s a 24.5 percent increase from the 2010 census, making Bowling Green the fastest growing city in the entire state of Kentucky.

Bowling Green City Manager Jeff Meisel said he especially is happy to see that from last year, Bowling Green’s population Grew almost 6 percent. 

“We want to always live within our means, and not overtax our citizens any more than we need to. So, with the good growth we had from 2020 to 2021 came in to about 5.7 percent growth. We’re going to take that natural growth in assessment and live with that increase,” said Meisel.
