UPDATE:

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A state of the art, $250,000 outdoor fitness area for Preston Miller Park in the City of Bowling Green has been approved.

City commissioners approved the funding for the project at their regular meeting Tuesday afternoon.

The area will feature more than two dozen exercise machines, allowing park visitors to do chest and leg presses, chin-ups, pull-ups and more.

The city is paying $200,000 of the bill, while two sponsors have come on board and have agreed to pay the remaining $50,000.

If all goes to plan, the fitness area should be up and running sometime next year.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A first of its kind project in south central Kentucky may soon be coming to a park in Bowling Green.

At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, city leaders are expected to vote on a $250,200 outdoor fitness area at Preston Miller Park.

The area would feature more than two dozen exercise machines, allowing park visitors to do chest and leg presses, chin-ups, pull-ups and more. If approved, the exercise area would also feature a shade cover to block the sun and rain.

The city would foot $200,200 of the bill, while two sponsors have come on board and have agreed to pay the remaining $50,000.

Recently, city parks officials visited a park in Cincinnati with a similar set up and were blown away by what they saw.

“The idea for us has been something we’ve thought about for a while,” said Brent Belcher, the city’s parks and recreation director. “We thought, how can we create an opportunity to increase health and fitness throughout our community? We thought this was a perfect opportunity.”

If approved, Belcher is hopeful the fitness area can be up and running sometime next calendar year.
