Bowling Green Buddy House and school recognize World Down Syndrome Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Down syndrome occurs when a person has a third copy of the 21st chromosome, which is why World Down Syndrome Day is held on 3-21 or March 21.

The Buddy House in Bowling Green, an organization that provides services to people with Down syndrome, is recognizing World Down Syndrome Day.

“Tonight, is a World Down Syndrome Day celebration. It will be held at the Bowling Green Hot Rods stadium from 5:30 to 8. We’re just celebrating and having a big fun event for everyone to come to,” Buddy House office manager Mekensie Ford-Conway said.

The Buddy House isn’t the only organization commemorating the day.

T.C. Cherry Elementary is one of several schools to hold silly sock day to raise awareness. Special educator Margie Clevenger tells the story of why World Down Syndrome Day is special to her.

“I actually began as an instructional assistant. The first year that I taught, there were three students with Down syndrome,” Clevenger said. “They were such a bright spot in my life. I learn more from them then I could ever teach them.

“I love what they add to my life. I’ve learned too many virtues; patience, kindness, acceptance, all those things that we struggle working on, they make it easy,” Clevenger said.
