Blanco, Martinez named to CUSA Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WKU SPORTS) – WKU Women’s Tennis senior Samantha Martinez and junior Sofia Blanco have been named to the Conference USA Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday.
The Lady Toppers are the only program with multiple representatives on the CUSA Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team, which features six players from the conference.
“Really happy about Samantha and Sofia making the All-Academic Team,” WKU Head Coach Greg Davis said. “Not many people make that – there’s only six people out of the whole conference that makes that – so for them to be great players on the court and the top in the conference off the court says a lot for them both individually and their character.”
Martinez, a native of La Guaira, Venezuela, is a Marketing/Social Media Marketing major with a 4.0 GPA. She was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team, CUSA All-Academic Team, and an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2023. Martinez has gone 3-1 in singles play this season and leads the team with her 15-4 record in doubles. The 15 doubles wins are the seventh-most in a single season in program history. Martinez has gone 56-26 in doubles in her WKU career, and holds the program record for career doubles wins.
Blanco is a Business Data Analytics/Computer Science major with a 3.88 GPA. Like Martinez, Blanco was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team, CUSA All-Academic Team, and an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2023. The Caracas, Venezuela, native has a team-best 17-2 record in singles play this spring, along with eight doubles wins. The 17 singles wins are tied for third-most in a single season in program history, and her 39 career singles wins are third-most in program history. Blanco has 38 career doubles wins, which ranks second in program history behind Martinez. Blanco was named the CUSA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 13.
The Lady Toppers are in the winningest three-year period in program history with 47 wins during that stretch. WKU is 14-9 overall this season leading into Monday’s regular-season finale at Florida Atlantic.
