Birds flying south for the winter
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As temperatures get colder, animals are making the great migration to have a warmer holiday season.
Lots of birds are traveling south for the cooler months. Birds travel in flocks for warmth as well as protection.
The journey for some birds is dependent on weather conditions or time of year. However, for some birds, migrating to the more tropical areas is custom.
One of these birds include the Sandhill Crane, which originated from Northern Michigan and parts of Canada. These birds do pass through Kentucky and make a stop near the Barren River Lake area.
Officials say recent warmer temperatures have impacted migration this December, especially for Kentucky duck hunters.
John Brunjes, Migratory Bird Coordinator for the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, says, regardless of opinions, viewing flocks can be a great learning opportunity. He adds to pay attention to “how each bird flies in relation to each other” and how amazing “they know exactly where the other birds position is.”
