BGPD warns about holiday DUI risks, urges residents to stay safe

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As the holiday season continues, the Bowling Green Police Department (BGPD) is ramping up efforts to prevent impaired driving incidents. With Christmas and New Year’s celebrations approaching, BGPD Public Information Officer Ronnie Ward has shared key reminders to keep the community safe on the roads.

“Families will get together, and there will be parties for Christmas and New Year’s Eve,” Ward said. “But one thing we want to remind everyone is it’s never okay—there’s never a good excuse—to get behind the wheel while you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It’s something that can change your life and the lives of others who are innocent.”

BGPD encourages everyone to plan ahead to avoid impaired driving. Ward emphasized the importance of preparing for situations where alcohol is involved. “Take a designated driver with you, have a plan ahead of time, call someone, and let them know where you are,” he said. “Make arrangements beforehand so you don’t have to make those decisions in an impaired state.”

Ward also urged residents to act if they suspect an impaired driver. “If you notice someone in front of you seems to be impaired, call 911 or 270-393-4244 and let them know,” Ward said. “Just give the tag information and what you’ve observed, and an officer will get to them as quickly as we can.”

While legal limits for driving under the influence are defined as a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher, Ward cautioned that even small amounts of alcohol can impair driving abilities. “The reality is, .08 might be what the law says, but for some people, .05 or less could still mean you’re unsafe to drive,” he explained. “There’s no safe time after drinking to take the risk of driving. It’s just not worth it.”

In addition to impaired driving concerns, BGPD advises drivers to be cautious of weather conditions, heavier traffic, and overall road safety. Ward recommended leaving extra space between vehicles, wearing seatbelts, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained for winter weather.

“Let’s be a little more courteous to each other this holiday season,” Ward said. “Give people space, let others merge, and focus on keeping yourself and everyone else safe.”
