BGFD offers fire safety tips after string of house fires

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In less than a month, the Bowling Green Fire Department has worked at least four structure fires that caused extreme damage to the buildings.

Two fires occurred over the Easter holiday weekend on Clay Street and Park Street as well as one on Kentucky Street in mid-March followed by one on 12th Avenue.

Katie McKee says this is strange for this time of the year to see so many destructive fires so close together in time and distance.

The fire department advises the public to be cautious of heat sources in your home to help protect you and your family.

Do not leave a stove, oven, candle, hair styling tool or any other heat source on while you are out of the room or out of the house, according to McKee.

McKee also says when grilling, move the grill away from you home for safety.

She also says it is illegal to open burn in the city without a permit.

With three of the four fires occurring on a Friday and one on a Sunday, all of which no one was home, some are asking if arson is to blame.

But, while the cause for each of the four fires is still under investigation, fire officials do not believe the fires are linked at this time.
