Beshear joins Black History Month Celebration

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Andy Beshear joined the Kentucky Black Caucus Tuesday morning at the Legislative Black History Month Celebration.

There in Frankfort, Beshear honored past and present black leaders like Martin Luther King Junior, Rosa Parks, and Kentucky’s own Muhammad Ali.

The governor highlighted the recent progress towards equality in the state, including the removal of a divisive statue from the very rotunda where he delivered his speech and the posthumous recognition of civil rights leader Charles Young as an honorary brigadier general.

Beshear emphasized the importance of listening and learning from our history, saying, “It is impossible for me to imagine the horror, scars, and distrust that moments in our history have created: a history we must look back on because we never should turn away from even the most painful moments of our past.”

The governor concluded his speech by saying the only way we can create equality is through establishing universal pre-k, restoring voting rights, and ensuring all Kentuckians can access quality health care.
