FRANKFORT, Ky. – In order to increase safety for Kentucky youth in state custody, Beshear announced a female-only detention center.

During a Team Kentucky update, the governor said the new detention center will open in Campbell County.

Beginning this month, females between the ages of 11 and 18 ordered by courts to secure detention will stay at the DJJ Campbell Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

The detention center located in Newport has 35 detention beds available. Per state statute, female juveniles will be separated based on where they are in the process of their court case.

At this location, youth will receive education, counseling, recreation opportunities, meals, snacks and health care, according to Team Kentucky’s website.
