Beshear announces $1.4 million for renewable projects using Kentucky tires
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Several local counties are set to benefit from funding for community projects using recycled Kentucky tires.
According to Gov. Andy Beshear’s office, the governor and the Energy and Environment Cabinet secretary Rebecca Goodman awarded $1.4 million for the projects on Tuesday, which will support outdoor activities for families.
Beshear’s office says funding for 37 projects will include benches, picnic tables and poured-in-place surfacing for walking trailers, walkways, fitness areas and playgrounds using the tires.
“This program takes a problem – waste tires in Kentucky – and turns it into opportunity,” Beshear said. “These projects support our New Kentucky Home and provide outdoor resources like walking trails and updated playgrounds that support an active lifestyle for our families.”
Goodman said the program continues to grow in popularity.
She says, “This year, we had 52 applications from across the Commonwealth. Not only are we able to help grow tire-recycling markets across the state and encourage proper management of waste tires, but we’re also supporting our communities in creating recreational opportunities.”
Grant funding for these projects originates from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, which helps manage approximately 5 million scrap tires in Kentucky annually.
