Barren River Animal Welfare Association in need
BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – They’ve seen a flood twice before, but this time has topped them both.
The Barren River Animal Welfare Association or BRAWA sits next to a river and a bit downhill from the road, making it vulnerable to flood water, and they are in clean up mode after the storm that passed through last night.
News 40 spoke to Connie Greer, the general manager for the shelter, who said she drove to the shelter in the middle of the storm just after 11 p.m. that night. Greer said her husband was against her going and feared for her safety, but she said she couldn’t stay at home knowing the animals were probably in need.
With water more than 2 feet high, many electrical items such as computers and vacuums were lost and unfortunately a couple of newborn puppies drowned in the night. Greer said she and a few other staff members were able to pull out all the animals and get them sheltered and returned them in the morning. Clean up efforts have been going on since around 6 a.m. and are sure to continue till Thursday.
Rob Hadley, a man who volunteers often at the shelter spoke to News 40, almost in tears when asked about the scene as he arrived at 9 a.m., Hadley said it was heartbreaking to him.
Greer ended her interview with saying that they’ll bounce back but would greatly appreciate anyone who can help, saying the biggest need is laundry.
BRAWA is currently looking to American Engineers to find a solution, Greer said the bet way she could describe it is as a moat to help prevent flooding for next time.
