Barren County voter turnout heavy today

GLASGOW, Ky.- Election Day brought out a crowd Tuesday in Barren County.

“Turnout here in Barren County has been great so far this morning,” Barren County Clerk Helena Chase Birdwell said.

There are three locations people could cast ballots – the Barren County High School gym, the Cave City Convention Center or the Austin Tracy Volunteer Fire Department.

“Voters seem really happy with the set up and the flow has been excellent. We did have one line this morning and of course that’s when we first opened the doors. But those voters were so excited and we were so excited to see them,” said Birdwell.

At Barren County High School, Birdwell said they are making the process as quick as possible for people.

“We just do our best to make this as smooth as possible for voters and we realize that your time is valuable. We want you to vote. So that’s our main goal. We want you in and out as quick as possible,” said Birdwell.

And voters say it went as smoothly for them as Birdwell said it would be.

“Very quickly, I’m actually on my way to work so I was kind of nervous if I was gonna have time or not but it went very quick. I was in and out within five to seven minutes,” said voter Jordon Chapman.

“Plenty of space to vote, plenty of workers to make the process go smoothly,” said voter Byron Perkins.

Because of early voting, Birdwell expected voting to be easier today for people than in years past.

They took extra precautions to keep everyone safe because of the pandemic.

Some of the voters said they felt like Barren County made things safe enough for them to vote in person and eased any health concerns.

“I have a mask and we’re distancing so I just felt safe to come,” said a voter.

“Everything was really spaced out. There was little guards up so I don’t feel like anything was contaminated, everything was really clean,” said Chapman.
