Barren County High School baseball players meet their new coach
GLASGOW, Ky. – Barren County High School Baseball players on Tuesday night met their new coach who is a former professional baseball player.
Bowling Green native Derrick Alfonso was named the new head coach for the Barren County High School baseball team.
“I’ve got a lot of relationships here and a lot of people that I know here,” Alfonso said. “Some of the kids I’ve either worked with in the past or coached over the last two to three years of travel ball. I’ve got a good rapport with the guys here and I look forward to taking them to the next level.”
Alfonso is excited to share his years of baseball experience with his new team. His resume includes a spot in the Warren Central Baseball Hall of Fame and he was even drafted by Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers.
“I look forward to the challenges it presents and going out and playing where I played back when I was in high school and all of the fields that I played on and some of the success I had hopefully bringing that to Barren County,” Alfonso said.
His players are looking forward to what they can learn from him.
“I know he’s very experienced on giving lessons and coaching younger kids and we got a lot of younger kids coming up. It’s a big freshman class so I feel like he’s gonna be able to train them up real well,” third baseman and pitcher Jameson Buie said.
“I’ve heard nothing but good news about him. I’ve seen him play. He’s a phenomenal player, brings a lot of experience to the team,” short stop Cash Moore said.
Alfonso plans to build his team on and off of the field.
“The goal at this level is first and foremost to mold the young men into outstanding citizens,” he said.
“I think he can shape us into the young men like he said that we need to be in our future,” catcher Gavin McCord said.
Practice for the Barren County High School baseball team starts Feb. 15, 2022 and the season starts mid-March.
