Barren Co. students participate in Farm Safety Day

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Nearly 600 Barren County students took part in Farm Safety Day on March 20.
According to Barren County Schools, the day is a collaborative effort between Barren County 4-H and Barren County Middle School FFA members.
The event was held in the middle school gym with the goal of creating strong agriculture safety awareness, school officials say.
The district says programming for the day will include interactive safety stations crafted by students and local volunteers to address topics of animal safety, ATV safety, nutrition and health awareness and mental health awareness.
According to school officials, Farm Safety Day will also provide activities and demonstrations to make students aware of safety practices, which could be lifesaving.
BCMS students Hardison Birge and Lilleigh Bennet expressed that the program was helpful in reminding them of the importance of safety when working on the farm.
BCMS FFA President and presenter Anna Cline stated, “I loved the opportunity to engage and educate students about how to live healthier, safer lives.” Lastly, Addisen Reed, BCMS FFA Vice President, commented, “I love how it taught kids about the importance of our safety in a fun way.’’
This event was held in conjunction with Agriculture Education Week, which was celebrated March 17 -21 statewide “to promote agriculture education, awareness and advocacy for an industry that is pivotal to our economy.”
Based on student response, officials say this event was successful in reiterating safe and healthy farming practices.
