Barren Co. Schools drop off buses and supplies in eastern KY

BARREN CO., Ky.-Three Barren County School buses made their way to eastern Kentucky this morning, filled with supplies to help the devastated community.

Three staff members left at 5 a.m. this morning and drove the buses to Letcher County High School. They are donating the buses to the school district to use. Letcher County lost 28 buses in the flood.

Each of the three buses was filled with over 700 items, totaling over 2,000…including clothes, blankets, food, school supplies, and more that will go to both Letcher County Schools and Jenkins Independent School District.

Barren County School staff say this isn’t the last time they’ll make a trip out there. They’re going to continue to help them as the weather gets colder.

“As we drove up here today I told them it didn’t feel like we were driving for four hours, it was just we were excited to get here and meet everyone and they met us. When we got here they were in the parking lot waiting to meet us,” said said Barren County Schools Director of Transportation Joey Bunch.

Both districts had to delay the start of school due to damage from the flooding. Jenkins Independent Schools are aiming to start school on September 13th. Letcher County Schools are thinking of starting September 18th.
