Avoiding Q.R. code scams

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- There’s a new scam happening that city officials want you to be aware of involving parking lots. Traditional park and pay stations have evolved. With new technology contactless pay options have been popular for many parking lots that use QR codes.

Telia Butler, the development coordinator in downtown BGKY shares that now people are scamming with stickers they place on top of the original QR codes, putting money in scammer’s pockets.

Butler says, “As technology changes, there’s always a new and new scam or a new racket going on as the world of technology evolves. So this was just next in line, and it’s very unfortunate that we’ve had some folks that get scammed out of some credit card dollars and get towed thinking that they had already paid to park.”

This is not just happening in Bowling Green. If you ever use a QR code to pay to park or if you are scanning any QR code on TV, you should go directly to the website to verify the account.
