LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — An animal rights group is calling for a tougher enforcement of cockfighting breeders in Kentucky. They say some breeders are shipping birds overseas. The group Animal Welfare Action took aim at Kentucky’s cockfighting law and urged federal investigators to look at a handful of rooster breeders. The group sent letters on Thursday to Kentucky’s two U.S. attorneys, urging them to enforce federal law. The group says breeders in Kentucky are sending birds to fighting pits overseas. Federal law bans buying, selling, possessing and transporting animals to participate at a fighting venue. Kentucky treats cockfighting as a misdemeanor.
