Animal cruelty report leads to dog fighting ring, police say

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Louisville man is charged with dog fighting violations following an investigation.
According to a uniform citation, the Louisville Metro Police Department received a call Tuesday regarding someone dropping a dog off in an alley in Louisville.
Authorities say the dog appeared to be injured.
Police say on scene, they observed a Pitbull with multiple bite wounds.
Authorities say the dog also had scarring on its body, indicating dog fighting. Through further investigation, police say two search warrants led to the discovery of more dogs at a Louisville location.
According to police, the dogs were on heavy chains and could not interact with each other.
In a bedroom, authorities say they saw what appeared to be blood-stained rugs. In addition, police say the walls had scratch marks and possible blood stains.
Authorities say at a second location, they located marijuana, scales, bags, a gun, a “break stick” used in dog fighting and penicillin used to treat injured dogs.
LMPD stated items and conditions indicated dog breeding, training and possessing dogs with the intent to fight.
As a result of the investigation, 62-year-old Oscar Mitchell of Louisville was arrested on Wednesday.
He faces five counts of dog fighting violations, three counts of second-degree cruelty to animals and trafficking in marijuana, less than 8 ounces, second offense.
